Overview
The DSC MAXSYS PC4020 is a commercial control platform with 16 on-board supervised zones, expandable to 128 zones through Combus modules, two addressable detection loops, and wireless receivers. It integrates burglary, access control, automation, and residential fire functions in one panel programmed primarily through DLS2002+ and LCD4500/LCD4501 keypads.

What the PC4020 Does Well
MAXSYS targets mid-market commercial and high-end residential: retailers, schools, industrial sites, and multi-partition buildings. Combus simplifies expansion without reworking the core panel. Addressable loops cut wire home runs for large floors. Integrated access control shares user codes and partitions with intrusion. T-Link TL-250/TL-300 IP reporting rides existing LAN infrastructure with AES encryption options.
Before You Service or Replace One
- Confirm PC4020 vs PC4020CF (commercial fire)—fire programming and loops differ.
- Inventory Combus module map (PC41xx, PC4216, PC4204, PC4820, PC4850, PC4702) before swapping the board.
- Run diagnostics ref
[04]to identify E (comms), T (tamper), or LV (low voltage) faults by module number. - MAXSYS is not PowerSeries Keybus—PK5500/RF5132 parts do not apply.
- Use Battery Standby Calculation Chart (DSC part 29003350) for listed standby times.
- Factory default
[0402]wipes all programming—only within first 10 minutes after power-up.

Troubleshooting
Start with **[*, 2] trouble display and diagnostics [04]**—most MAXSYS service calls are Combus power, module enrollment, phone/IP communicator programming, or auxiliary overload—not a failed PC4020 board.
Quick Diagnostic Flow
- Read active troubles with **
[*, 2]** at an LCD keypad. - Run General Diagnostics
[04]for E/T/LV module errors—note module number. - Verify AC, battery, and Combus voltage at the panel and faulted module.
- Check AUX / SAUX+ / PGM loading if Aux Supply Troub is present.
- For FTC or alt-comms faults, test phone line voltage or T-Link network/receiver path separately from zone programming.
- Use DLS2002+ event log for zone, access, and communication history.
Power and Battery
- Connect battery before AC on initial power-up per install manual.
- Size battery using Battery Standby Calculation Chart (part 29003350)—load varies with Combus modules and communicators.
- LV (low voltage) on diagnostics almost always means Combus sag—add PC4204 repower or reduce devices on the leg.
Combus and Module Supervision
- Combus: 4 conductors, non-shielded station wire; up to 1,000 ft per leg, 500 mA total bus power.
- After adding/removing modules, verify enrollment in programming—unenrolled modules show E faults.
- Tamper (T) on PC41xx/PC4216: check module cover switches and tamper wiring to COM.
- PC4204CX can repower distant Combus legs—plan repower before long homeruns.
Communicator / FTC
| Symptom | Check |
|---|---|
| TLM Trouble | ~50 VDC on line at panel TIP/RING; RJ-31X seizure ahead of house phones |
| FTC Trouble | Account, format (Contact ID/SIA), phone number, handshake with central station |
| Alt. Comms FTC | IP/cellular module registration, polling, AES/key settings |
| T-Link faults | PC-Link wiring, network path, receiver online, firewall rules |
FTC clears after a successful report if later attempts succeed.
Bell and Fire Troubles
- Bell CCT Trouble: open bell output—check PC4020 bell terminals or PC4702 supervised outputs.
- Fire Trouble: open fire loop; may not silence with
[#]until loop restored—check EOL and detector wiring. - Temporal fire patterns require PC4216 v2.1+ and correct PGM/output programming.
Zone Faults
- Assign zones through DLS or keypad programming—on-board zones 1–16 default to partition 1.
- Expanded zones via PC4108A (8-zone) or PC4116 (16-zone) modules on Combus.
- Addressable devices on PGM1/PGM2 loops when programmed as addressable (170 mA loop mode).
- Wireless via PC4164 v2.x—supervision and enrollment separate from hardwired zones.
Will Not Arm
| Symptom | Check |
|---|---|
| Not Ready | Open zones, troubles, or missing partition keypad assignment |
| Trouble beep | Active troubles—resolve or acknowledge per programming |
| Access control deny | User code access level, schedule, or PC4820 door shunt state |
| Fire trouble | Fire zones must be restored before normal arming in fire configs |
Factory Reset Warning
Ref [0402] (first 10 minutes after power-up) erases all programming and requires re-enrollment of every Combus module. Use only when intentional.
