Overview
The 6160 is Honeywell's standard alphanumeric keypad for VISTA panels. Its two-line display spells out messages and zone names ("FAULT 05 KITCHEN WINDOW") instead of the numbers-only display on the 6150, which makes troubleshooting much easier. It connects to the panel's four-wire keypad bus.
Related models
- 6150: fixed-word display (numbers and preset words only).
- 6160RF / 6150RF: add a built-in 5800-series wireless receiver, so you can use wireless sensors without a separate receiver.
- 6160PX: adds a proximity reader for key tags.
- 6160C and similar suffixes: newer or regional versions of the same keypad.
Error Codes
The 6160 shows the panel's messages in words. The ones that cause the most confusion:
- DISARMED – Hit * for faults: something is open; press * to scroll through it.
- CHECK + zone name: a trouble on that zone. See VISTA CHECK message.
- COMM. FAILURE: the panel could not reach the monitoring company. See communication failure.
- Busy – Standby or a blank screen just after power-up: the panel is initializing.
Troubleshooting
The keypad is dead or shows nothing
Check all four wires at the keypad and at the panel. If other keypads work, the problem is this keypad's wiring, address, or the keypad itself.
The keypad lights up but ignores the panel
Almost always an addressing problem: the keypad is at an address the panel has not enabled, or two keypads share an address. Check the address (below) and compare it with the panel's keypad programming.
Zone names are missing
Descriptions are stored in the panel, not the keypad. If a zone shows only a number, no descriptor was programmed for it.
Compatible Peripherals
Works with VISTA panels including the VISTA-15P, VISTA-20P, and VISTA-21iP. Mixing 6150 and 6160 keypads on one panel is fine, as long as each has its own address.
Installation Notes
Setting the keypad address
- Power the keypad up (connect it, or power-cycle the panel).
- Within the first minute, press 1 and 3 together. The display shows the current address.
- Enter a two-digit address and press * to save.
On VISTA-15P, 20P, and 21iP panels keypads use addresses 16 through 23, and each address in use must be enabled in the panel's programming. Address 31 is non-addressable mode for older panels and does not work on these.
Wiring
Four conductors to the panel's keypad (ECP) terminals: red +12 V, black ground, green data in, yellow data out. Long runs or several keypads on thin wire can cause brown-outs; check your panel manual's wire-length table.
FAQs
Can I replace a 6150 with a 6160?
Yes. Wire it to the same four conductors and set it to the same address the 6150 used.
Why does a new keypad only beep?
It is usually at address 31 or an address the panel has not enabled. Set the address with 1 + 3 at power-up.
