Overview

The Arlo SmartHub (VMB4540, VMB5000) connects Arlo Pro/Ultra/Essential wire-free cameras to Wi-Fi, extends battery life, and can store clips on local USB storage.

The SmartHub links wire-free Arlo cameras to your router, can improve battery life, and supports optional local USB storage for recordings. It is not the Arlo Home Security alarm hub — Z-Wave alarm sensors require the separate Home Security hub.

What This SmartHub Does Well

See summary above — the SmartHub bridges wire-free cameras to Wi-Fi and optional local storage; it does not supervise Z-Wave alarm sensors.

Before You Service or Replace One

  • Model — VMB4540 vs VMB5000 — camera generation compatibility differs.
  • USB storage — verify format and capacity limits before relying on local clips.
  • Wi-Fi band — hub connects cameras to router; place for strong router signal.
  • Firmware — update SmartHub and paired cameras after major app updates.

Error Codes

Arlo products report faults through the Arlo app device status and device event history — not traditional numeric keypad codes like hardwired alarm panels.

How to read status

  1. Open Arlo appMenuAlarm (or device tile for cameras).
  2. Tap device status or the device — note Offline, Tampered, Low Battery, Open.
  3. Tap the fault for Arlo's suggested steps and linked support articles.
  4. For hub issues, check Home Security hub / SmartHub connectivity first — many "sensor offline" faults are mesh or hub internet issues.
